Living with diabetes requires vigilant management of your overall health, and your vision is no exception. At Hamade Eye Care Clinic, Dr. Issam Hamade provides specialized, proactive diabetic eye care designed to protect your sight from the damaging effects of fluctuating blood sugar levels. Diabetic eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema, can progress silently, causing irreversible damage before you ever notice a change in your vision. Through advanced retinal imaging and meticulous evaluations, we focus on early detection and intervention to ensure your eyes remain healthy and your vision stays clear.

What is Diabetic Eye Care?

Diabetic eye care is a highly specialized branch of ophthalmology focused on monitoring, diagnosing, and treating the unique ocular complications that arise from Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes.

Diabetic Retinopathy Screening

Chronically high blood sugar can weaken the delicate blood vessels in your retina, causing them to leak fluid or bleed. We use advanced diagnostic tools to detect these microvascular changes in their earliest stages, long before they threaten your sight.

Macular Edema Evaluation

We closely monitor the macula—the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision—for any signs of swelling or fluid buildup (edema). Identifying and managing macular edema early is critical for preventing central vision loss.

What to Expect During Your Evaluation

Your diabetic eye evaluation at Hamade Eye Care Clinic is comprehensive, painless, and specifically tailored to your medical history. Dr. Issam Hamade will begin by discussing your current A1C levels, medications, and how long you have been managing diabetes. The core of this exam involves dilating your pupils, which allows us an unobstructed, microscopic view of the blood vessels at the back of your eye. We also utilize high-resolution Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanning to capture cross-sectional images of your retina. This technology allows us to see fluid leaks and tissue damage that are completely invisible to the naked eye. We will clearly explain all our findings and collaborate with your primary care physician or endocrinologist to support your overall health plan.

Diabetic Eye Care Benefits

Proactive, specialized monitoring is the single most effective way to protect your independence and prevent diabetes-related vision loss.

Preventing Vision Loss

The most significant benefit of routine diabetic eye care is the prevention of blindness. When diabetic retinopathy is caught early, modern treatments are highly successful at halting the progression of the disease and preserving your sight.

Advanced Baseline Monitoring

By establishing a detailed baseline of your retinal health using digital imaging, we can track even the most subtle changes to your blood vessels year after year, allowing for precise, timely interventions.

Collaborative Health Management

Your eye health is a direct reflection of your systemic health. We provide detailed reports of your ocular findings to your broader healthcare team, helping them make more informed decisions regarding your diabetes management and medication.

Frequently Asked Questions

At a minimum, all patients with diabetes should have a comprehensive, dilated eye exam once a year. However, if Dr. Hamade detects early signs of retinopathy or if your blood sugar has been difficult to control, we may recommend visits every three to six months to closely monitor your eyes.

Unfortunately, no. In its early and most treatable stages, diabetic eye disease typically presents absolutely zero symptoms and causes no pain. By the time you notice blurred vision, dark spots, or floaters, the disease has already reached an advanced stage. This is why routine dilated exams are non-negotiable.

Absolutely. Maintaining strict control over your blood glucose levels is the most powerful action you can take to prevent or slow the onset of diabetic retinopathy. Managing your blood pressure and cholesterol levels also significantly reduces your risk of vision complications.

If we detect advanced diabetic eye disease, several highly effective treatments are available. These may include specialized laser therapies to seal leaking blood vessels or intraocular injections (anti-VEGF medications) designed to reduce swelling in the macula and prevent abnormal vessel growth.
